Abstract
The minimum weight concept is discussed in relation to the plastic design of framed structures. Although designers may have been right to steer clear of this technique in the past, it should provide an increasingly useful design aid now that interactive computers are available in offices. One important aspect of minimum weight plastic design is the easy way the optimising function and the linear conditions can be adjusted to the will of the designer so as to produce alternative designs which do not violate the collapse load requirement.
