Abstract
Inflated form technology involves the usage of an airtight membrane under internal pressure to create the form for the application of materials which will conform to the shape of the membrane. The applied materials, when set, become self supporting and allow for the removal of the membrane. The materials can vary from Urethane foam to Shotcreted concrete. The application of blocks or other rigid units can also result in a self sustaining structure without the use of centering or internal supporting members.
An inflated membrane will always conform to a double curved surface without the creation of localized flat spots which can occur with built up forms. The proper application of subsequent material should result in a structure with virtually no geometric flaws. The structural integrity of arches or shells will always exceed any other form and the application of inflated forming technology to their creation will produce stronger structures at lower costs. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
