Summary
It is important to develop a standard railway system between different European states for the growth of the internal market and to improve the economic and social cohesion of the European Union. The project "Interoperable Monitoring, Diagnosis and Maintenance Strategies for Axle Bearings" (MAXBE) is a project under the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission for research and technological development with the aim to harmonize and connect transport systems. The Technical University Braunschweig with its Institute of Transport, Railway Construction and Operation (IVE) was involved in technical work packages (WP) 5 "Integration of systems" and 7 "Development of asset management technologies".
This paper summarises the developments within the scope of railroad maintenance being part of the contribution of the IVE to WP 5 and herein especially "Diagnostic systems, Optimal Distribution and Interval Rates" and "Development of a Software Tool for the Optimal Physical Distribution of the Diagnostic Systems". Wayside diagnostic devices (WDD) and especially hot box devices (HBD) to detect axle-bearings failures are not only relevant for maintenance questions, but also very important for the safe operation and e.g. to prevent derailments. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £22)
