Abstract
This paper is concerned with the emerging data exchange standard known as ISO/STEP and its applicability within the construction industry. In particular, it seeks to explain the nature and relevance of two of the key concepts of STEP - Product Models and Application Protocols – and highlight some of the difficulties in applying these to construction. A proposal to introduce Domain Application Protocols to overcome some of these problems is outlined.
