Summary
This paper proposes an optimization methodology for double tuned mass dampers (DTMDs). A metaheuristic method, the harmony search (HS) algorithm, is employed in searching for all optimum values of the DTMD including two masses, stiffness and damping coefficients. The proposed method was applied for a ten story structure. The results show that the method is effective for the tuning of DTMDs. Also, the results are compared with the optimum tuned mass damper (TMD) design using same optimization process. For TMD and DTMD, the robustness of parameters was checked by changing the mass of the structure. According to the comparisons, DTMD is more effective in reducing vibrations and more robust than a single TMD.
