Summary
While mechanically operated railways have a nearly 200 year long history in
Europe, for Oman and the other GCC members, the challenge of building a railroad
network from the ground up to meet the increasing demands of passenger and
freight transport under growing economic pressure has now to be faced. The GCC
countries will have to solve the complications that arise from technical and social
difficulties, as there is little experience of building up and operating a railway
network in the predominant environmental conditions, and poor educational and
research infrastructure that addresses specific current needs. To meet these concerns,
the German University of Technology in Oman is developing a concept for an
Omani Rail Institute. This concept combines the advantages of the European railway
culture with the needs of Oman and the GCC, respectively, and is introduced in this
paper.
