Summary
Current commercial software for micro-simulation of railway operations can be time-consuming and requires detailed infrastructure, operations and rolling stock modeling. The alternative approach presented in this paper uses Petri nets to simulate railway operations by including stochastic variations of train travel times. Compared with other simulation models, a high level of detail in the modeling is included which proves that this model can obtain accurate results regarding the reproduction of the train operation both under normal conditions or high traffic perturbations. The Petri nets model was tested using the simulation train operations of the Cascais line in the Lisbon metropolitan area.
