Abstract
Composite construction in the form of a cylindrical vessel with a steel-concrete-steel sandwich wall is described. Tests on such cylinders under external pressure show that they are not susceptible to instability, that the steel skins yield before the concrete crushes, that their behaviour is predictable and their strength can be determined by the limit theory outlined in this paper. The results are given of a recent series of tests in which composite cylinders were subjected to axial load in addition to external pressure.

This form of construction has application to sea-bed vessels for hydrocarbon extraction from deep water, the legs of offshore structures and arctic structures to resist ice loading.
