Abstract
Any object with a low weight is referred to as being light. That is to say, it has a small mass. If one compares objects with different forms which are capable of transmitting the same forces over the same distances, the object which achieves this with the smallest mass is lighter than the others. Objects capable of transmitting the forces with a small mass are lightweight structures.
Any object which exists materially has a form. It is subject to internal and external forces and is capable of assuming or transferring these loads. This means that every object is a structure in the broadest technical sense. Its mass is identical to the quantity of material it comprises. The form of lightweight structures is rarely coincidental. In the majority of cases, it is the result of optimisation processes which, for one reason or another, follow the principle of a reduction in mass and/or energy without a loss of efficiency.
