Abstract
Reasons are listed for treating aesthetics as important in the design of "non-conventional" structures. An explanation is given of the sense in which the term is used in this paper. "Aesthetics" is defined by listing the types of response to built form which are to be included under this heading. The predispositions of the observer are seen as an important part of aesthetic response. Problems of aesthetics which are characteristic of non-conventional structures are reviewed. It is suggested that it is often more appropriate to emphasize the distinctive characteristics of such structures, rather than to pursue "Beauty" in the conventional, formal sense. The appearance of a number of silos is used as an example of the application of the points discussed.
