Abstract
Intensive damage to adjacent buildings during several major
earthquakes due to the "pounding effect" has entailed a
drastic increase in the gaps of expansion joints required by
recent seismic codes; these gaps are often in conflict with
architectural needs.
This paper describes a solution intended to reduce significantly the pounding effect by limiting the relative seismic displacements of adjacent buildings and, consequently, the amount of potential energy. Thus, exaggerated gaps could be avoided. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
