Abstract
Recent years significant research have been done on the steel column-bases. More and more numerical models are introduced for the analysis of the complicated behaviour. In this paper the authors give a general view about the behaviour and modelling aspects of the base plate type column-bases. The different level of target models for column-bases are classified. The 2D and 3D finite element models of column-bases are discussed in details. The assumptions, requirements, and computational aspects of the highly nonlinear models are shown. The numerical analyses by 2D finite element models are demonstrated (column-base components: T-stub , tension/compression zones). Advanced 3D finite element models under development are introduced. General conclusion is given on computational background of the numerical models of base plate type column-bases. The role of these models in the column-base research is discussed.
