Abstract
This paper gives a short summary about the behaviour and
effect of column bases on steel frames. It offers a direct
method for design to be used when the structure fails by
instability of the whole structure before a complete yield
mechanism has developed. Attention is drawn to a special
application of Shanley's phenomenon as well.
The moment-(relative) rotation characteristics of a nominally pinned and of a fixed column-base connection, obtained from numerical simulations performed on a finite element model. complete with the results of two experimental tests, are used to demonstrate the applicability of the four-parameter Richard model, widely used in the case of beam-to-column connections, to the column-base connect ions behaviour modelling. Therefore, in the global analysis of steel frames this model may be used to approximate the behaviour of the base plated column-base connections as well as the beam-to-column connections. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
