Abstract
A knowledge-based system (KBS) called SIGMA is described
which can be used to assist with the management and
interpretation of geotechnical data from a site investigation.
The heart of the system consists of a database for storing the
site investigation information and this is tightly coupled to a
knowledge-based system for interpretation of the data.
The database has been implemented using the INGRES database management system. The knowledge-based component of the system has been developed using PROKAPPA, an object oriented development environment on a Sun Sparc2 workstation. The combination of database and knowledge-based system technology provides a very powerful tool for data management and interpretation. The applicability of object-oriented methodologies to site investigation data interpretation is discussed. The PROKAPPA software and the associated tools which have been used in the development of SIGMA are described. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
