Abstract
An automatic method of yield line analysis, due to Munro and Da Fonseca, involves the use of an arbitrary finite-element mesh. This paper discusses the problem of optimizing the mesh in order to bring its edges more closely into alignment with the true yield lines, thus improving the accuracy of the prediction of collapse load.
