Abstract
This paper describes a new formulation for the elasto-plastic
large displacement analysis of thin-walled members and
frames. The proposed formulation is one-dimensional but
facilitates the detailed modelling of any open cross-section,
including the effects of the spread of plasticity and
stress/strain reversals. This is achieved through the use of
monitoring points over the cross-section where direct
material strains are evaluated and the corresponding stresses
are established according to any stress-strain relationship.
Examples using ADAPTIC demonstrate the accuracy of the
proposed formulation and its applicability to the study of the
inelastic response of thin-walled structures subject to lateral
torsional instability.
