Abstract
There are many excellent office software packages available to managers in civil engineering, both on site and in head office. There is also much excellent hardware available. But the contractor is too busy to spend time and mental effort on attempting to persuade various hardware and software to work in unison to perform the tasks he needs, in the manner in which he needs them done. Therefore, instead of altering the ways of his organisation to the ways of the computer, the contractor (and the resident engineer) need computer systems which perform civil engineering tasks in a civil engineering way.

This paper identifies the areas in which many site managers need computer aid, describes some systems which have been developed to meet these needs, by accepting input and presenting output in a civil engineering form directly usable by site management, and proposes that in general site managers are best served by the purchase of micro computer based systems which are developed, supplied and supported by one supplier as a complete system.
