Real Time River Flow Forecasting

Abstract
River Flow Forecasts are used for various purposes in river basin planning and management activities. The use of computers presents a tool for removing the extensive calculations and data processing which river flow forecasting usually involves. The vastly increased speed of flow simulation allows for such forecasts to be used in very short term prediction (1-24 hrs.).

The Authors present a River Basin Model capable of satisfactorily simulating hydrological response. Three case studies are cited where calibration of the model has been successful and river flow forecasting becomes a possible management option. The Model has been transferred to a microcomputer, thus removing restrictions on location, where formerly lack of access to a computer would have rendered flow forecasting unsuitable. The process of transferring the River Basin Model between computers and the problems encountered are described by the Authors.

The paper highlights the problems associated with practical software development to suit a complex real world problem and includes discussion on the problems of interfacing with the data network system and the real-time error checks in output results.
