Abstract
This paper shows how a new generation of digital hydraulic machines can be used to
create a series hybrid transmission for a diesel-powered railcar, with gas accumulators
used for on-board energy storage. Simulation results are provided for a concept
passenger vehicle based on this technology, showing improvements to performance
and fuel consumption. The conversion of a demonstration vehicle is described and test
results are presented.
