Abstract
The development of a prototype of an Expert System for Pavement maintenance and REhabilitation Strategy in the State of Oho (ESPRESSO) is briefly reviewed. Procedures for testing and validating ESPRESSO are described. The roles of the knowledge engineers and independent experts are explained in detail. Expert evaluation results and revisions in response to evaluations are discussed. The authors conclude that the expert system ESPRESSO is valid for the intended purpose, i.e., to guide young (non-expert) engineers in the Ohio Department of Transportation in the selection of pavement repair and maintenance strategies.
