Abstract
A numerical method is presented in which hierarchical forms are used to solve a surface nonlinear problem - a 2-D elastic contact problem with friction. In a finite element incremental contact problem analysis via mixed formulation, hierarchical forms have also proved to be a useful device to improve the accuracy of solution with a reduced number of degrees-of-freedom, and the automatic refinements, with an appropriate error indicator, lead to reduced human intervention in computation. On the other hand, the mixed formulation for finite element incremental contact analysis itself is capable of accelerating the contact iterative process. These procedures allow the solution of a large spectrum of elastic contact problems to be more efficient.
