Summary
This paper provides a discussion concerning working conditions in the railway sector, from data produced in a research project developed for the daily routine of the operation of load trains, on a Brazilian railway, Minas Gerais. Considering the centrality of the work of conductors in driving the trains, it is proposed to reflect on the conditions under which these professionals work, often verifying the existence of problems that might put in check the technical and organisational options assumed, and therefore require greater attention to reorient possible interventions. The reflection goes through the approach of "painfulness in work conditions" in Brazil and in France, in the scope of the labour laws designed to protect workers; giving visibility to the French system indicators, which recognise the painfulness and propose improvements to the onerous work conditions, health and safety of workers.
