Summary
Designing railway switches for two decades has involved building a process for the optimisation of switch operation. This paper describes what this means: distributing thrust along the moving rails; making sure there is sufficient free wheel clearance to avoid impacts and wear; checking that any obstructions would be detected; providing sufficient 'headroom' between required and available thrust to account for typical causes of degradation and to reduce maintenance intervention; and optimising supplementary drives.
