Abstract
A new expert system is being developed which will have consulting abilities for structural engineers. It will support the diagnosing process and the design of repair measures for damages at concrete structures. The basis of the new expert system called ContecES - the name indicates its use for concrete technological application - is REPCON. REPCON is an expert system prototype developed at Darmstadt University until 1991. REPCON is a rule-based expert system whereas ContecES is object-oriented and rule-based. Besides the object-orientation the expert system shell used for ContecES has further abilities which make it possible to go a different way of designing the whole structure of the application. This results in a more systematic programme flow and also improves the debugging of the programme. Aspects of the KADS methodology which is an abstract approach of designing knowledge-based systems have been applied in the design phase of ContecES.
