Summary
The work, described in this paper, is an investigation of the dynamic behavior of a ballasted railway track modeled as a stochastic heterogeneous media. Three-dimensional simulations carried out using the spectral element method were used to generate the results. This leads to a comparison, in the frequency space, of different ratios of mechanical properties of soil and ballast together with homogeneous compared with heterogeneous models. The presence of dispersion in the homogeneous case and the influence of the heterogeneities are stressed. Additional apparent damping is induced in the free field in the heterogeneous case.
