Abstract
It is shown in this paper that according to the evolutionary process. automated systems in structural design are classified into four basic types: (1) traditional computer-aided design. (2) database management systems. (3) expert systems. and (4) neural networks. To improve productivity in structural design. automation strategies are introduced. Some softwares for structural design using these strategies are briefly described. They are DSFS, SAPSO, LMS, SWDES, CCES, SMLBOR, NNFPC, and NNISE. In conclusion, an evolution of the traditional structural design is currently underway, driven by the rapid advances in computer technology. Structural design is becoming more software dependent and more software intensive.
