Summary
The concept of center of resistance (CR) is the most important related to tooth movement in orthodontia; however, its existence is an object of debate among the researchers. As CR is an idealized point for two dimensions, some authors affirms that is not possible to extend the concept for an asymmetric body delimited by another elastic body in three dimensions. In this sense, in this research was carried out using a numerical analysis, with ANSYS Workbench, on teeth behavior modelling. The model was discretized using three-dimensional solid elements and the contacts, between the different parts of the model, were generated automatically with ANSYS. The search for the CR was made by applying an external binary in the premolar tooth. The numerical analysis suggested that the CR does not exist and is highly dependent of two factors. The first is the relative flexibility between tooth and the peridontium (PDL) and the second is the PDL stiffness in each of the reference directions.
