Summary
In this paper the seismic response of multi-storey reinforced concrete building characterized by high irregularity in plan is considered. Two base isolation systems are analyzed, respectively the high damping rubber bearing (HDRB) and the high damping rubber bearing placed in parallel with friction slider isolators (HDRB+FS) with friction sliders characterized by a low friction coefficient.
The seismic analysis has been performed with a dynamic linear and nonlinear analysis as prescribed by the European seismic code EC8 and according to the Italian seismic code NTC 2008. The results have been evaluated in terms of stresses and in terms of deformations. For the deformations the inter-storey drifts arising from the seismic loadings have been evaluated at the different levels of the building and compared for the different dynamic analyses. In the case where a nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed the Italian code NTC 2008 requires the comparison of the analysis with a dynamic analysis with the design response spectrum. With regards to the nonlinear time history analysis the effects of accidental eccentricities have been analyzed and their influence in the seismic response of the base isolated reinforced concrete buildings is discussed. purchase the full-text of this paper (price £20)
