Summary
A two-dimensional finite element model for the rolling contact of a wheel on a rail is presented that accounts for the roughness of the contact surfaces. A fully elasticplastic material description enables the computation of the heavily deformed layer observed in metallographic investigations of rolling sliding contacts. It can be shown that this layer is produced as a result of the contact of asperities and superimposes the contact mechanical deformation arising from the rolling sliding contact of flat surfaces. The roughness model is compared to a flat model and the prediction of the surface deformation is compared to metallographic investigations.
