Summary
A monitoring system for signal equipment has been in place for several years at the East Japan Railway Company. Hence, the state of signal equipment at the control room or the maintenance centre is known. But this system was installed over twenty years ago, so it cannot meet the needs of: "stable operations," "broadband data transfer," or "easy construction and easy maintenance". To satisfy these needs, a monitoring system using radio communication has been developed and studied as a new method to realize the outdoor operations along railroads. In these studies, terminals and repeaters based on the ZigBee protocol have been developed. The system has been developed using two different radio bands simultaneously. Eventually, good results from fundamental examinations using the developed equipment were achieved.
