Abstract
We describe an innovative, graphical approach to implement a new generation of hazard databases, which are used t o evaluate the seismic risk of portfolios of buildings. In contrast to the conventional approach of digitizing and reconstruction of polygons, we make use of the computer's ability to read maps, directly. The map and its contents are scanned in as pixel images, and the hazard data are retrieved directly from the images. Using a layered, conceptual, rectilinear reference frame and the indexed and sequential nature of geographic images, hazard data are accessed very efficiently and directly from the images. A new data structure based on a hybrid raster-vector format is developed to facilitate image processing within the memory constraints of the microcomputer and to expedite data retrieval.
