Summary
In this paper a comparative study of numerical formulations for the analysis of pilesoil
interaction problems where the pile is subject to horizontal loading is presented.
The soil is modelled as a continuous semi-infinite medium and the fundamental
solution used is based on the work of Mindlin. The pile is modelled using the finite
difference method and the boundary element method. The pile-soil interface
tractions are approximated by a linear function for each element of the finite
difference method and linear, cubic and fourth degree polynomials for the finite
elements. With the use of compatibility equations in displacements and tractions the
pile-soil interface systems of equations are obtained the solution of which enables
tractions and displacements in the piles to be obtained. The results obtained with
these formulations in the analysis of piles submitted to horizontal loading are
presented and their results compared.
