Summary
The aim of this paper is the description of a user friendly design tool to aid in the
preliminary design of mutli-storey steel columns using Eurocode 3. The design tool
was developed using the Microsoft Excel software, and the primary objective is for
the design tool to be utilised in a competitive industrial environment to reduce
engineering man-hours during early design stages. It is envisaged that the design
tool will be user friendly requiring limited engineering knowledge of the structural
design process for multi-storey steel columns, and that it will reduce the time
required in early design stages allowing increased efficiency during tendering. The
design tool will be validated using design examples from relevant academic sources
such as the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) and design books. The efficiency and
practicality of the design tool is evaluated using a feedback questionnaire distributed
to practicing design engineers.
