Abstract
This paper describes developments at the University of New Brunswick in investigating the possibilities of owners and contractors in the construction industry, using artificial intelligence, making financial commitments before design and scheduling occurs. The development of an expert system using a shell program to predict cost-time profiles for certain activities in the construction process is described. Further development work, investigating the possibilities of using historical data and expert systems for pre-engineering estimates, before design and scheduling occurs, is also discussed.
