Abstract
Modelling the knowledge in a particular domain is a difficult and time consuming task. To do it at a level comparable with a human expert may be impossible. This paper discusses an expert system for excavation groundwater control in which expertise is represented in the knowledge base by a system of parameter rankings, and advice is given by weighting the rankings according to the situation model, together with explanations and comments about methods and site.
