Summary
Vitória Minas Railway (EFVM - Portuguese stands) is one of the most productive
Brazilian railroads and is operated by Vale Company. With a length of 905 km, it
takes 40% of the whole Brazilian railroad load, and 80% of it is iron ore. In order to
achieve a high carrying capacity track, it is extremely important that efficient load
programming ought to be elaborated. In this context, it is essential for a tool that
helps programmer teams make decisions. This paper presents a programming model
which is based on network modeling, and can schedule vacant GDE wagons for iron
ore loading.
The objective of this work is to present a model that optimizes the hourly
scheduling of 84 empty GDE wagons lots considering a daily demand load, in order
to reduce the costs associated with this activity, with the use of a computer
application associated with a set of operational guidelines.
As a result, the model shows for each point of arrival: the initial and final load
portion, and queue time. The model was tested for 53 daily batches with 3 points of
loading, 4 points of transshipment and 11 points of loading. Therefore, the total
elapsed time by the model for 53 batches was 4.8 hours. The result found is lower
than the one reported on the railroad operations.
