Summary
Despite a lack of legal regulations related to the treatment of end-of-life rail vehicles, numerous initiatives aimed at reducing negative environmental impact of this type of waste are carried out leading to a development of a railway specific recovery infrastructure and to a design of railway products in a recycling-friendly way. So far, recycling was carried out because of the economic benefits that could be derived from the recovery of parts and components used as spare parts and from the recovery of some secondary raw materials. However, the implementation of the concept of sustainable development and the EU policy on waste management requires that in the future, all end-of-life rolling stock and scrap trains are subject to appropriate treatment and guarantee high recycling and recovery rates. This paper presents the legal regulations concerning the rolling stock, the benefits of recycling, the basic principles associated with the implementation of the recovery of rolling stock and actions undertaken by the producers in this field.
