Summary
A methodology for the assessment of material degradation and rolling contact
fatigue of rail profiles in switches & crossings have been developed over the last 10
years and set into operation. The methodology incorporates testing on a test stand
with modified input data and on a regular track section under operating conditions.
The assessment of the material behaviour performed using a special test frog on the
test stand using a frog of the type EH 60-500-1:12 installed in the track. Pearlitic
steel grades with different material compositions, bainitic steel grades and a typical
manganese (Mn 13) steel without an explosion hardened surface were compared to
the standard steel grade R 350HT.
