Summary
Nowadays, new EU directives in the railway transport require that state owned
companies manage independently the infrastructure, as network operators, and the
rolling stock, as provision of transport services or train operating companies.
Network operators should receive compensation in order to cover maintenance,
operation, management and financial costs.
In this paper it is calculated the wear produced by trains in the rail profiles,
which is assumed to be proportional to the maintenance costs. Three different trains
are studied: a high speed train, a commuter and a freight locomotive. The wheel-rail
contact problem is solved using a variable coefficient of friction and friction laws
identified from experimental measurements. Finally, the estimated values of the
damage in the rail profiles are compared to the compensation costs projected by the
regulation.
