Abstract
The failure of client and professional groups to communicate satisfactorily in the early stages of a construction project can lead to considerable problems in the later stages of the project and in the finished building. In this paper an examination is made of the feasibility of using knowledge-based systems to aid communication in the briefing process. A review is made of existing related knowledge-based systems and current research at Reading is described. This research has the objective of building a model of communication in the briefing process which can then be used as a basis for a knowledge-based system to assist clients and professional groups in the process of briefing.
