Summary
In this paper an insight is given into the testing technologies for wheelset and rail components at three full-scale test rigs owned by DB Systemtechnik. The test rigs with wheel-on-roller and linear wheel-on-rail designs are used for investigations of wheel and rail material. These relate to wear and rolling contact fatigue as well as to fracture mechanics and durability tests at wheelset construction, switches, noise absorbers etc. In comparison to field tests, it is a great advantage of rig tests that both partners, wheel and rail, can be observed and that results will be obtained much quicker than by in-service testing.
