Summary
This paper presents an alternative site-specific dynamic allowance factor for railway bridges. It is calculated numerically using a model that allows for train-bridge interaction and takes into account the track irregularities. A wide range of short to medium span bridges are studied while allowing for uncertainties associated with the traffic configuration and vehicle properties within a Monte Carlo analysis. The results clearly show that a smaller recommended allowance for dynamics can be safely defined, which in turn can prevent unnecessary repair or replacement of existing bridges.
