Summary
Starting from an existing solution, we used simple geometric and algebraic
manipulations to derive the equations for calculating stress increments due to an
embankment load (vertical, horizontal and shear), in any location of a half-space,
taking into account the whole embankment (not by adding portions). Versatility of
equations lies in the fact that can be directly implemented in any spread sheet or
program language and do not require any other geometrical consideration. To prove
their usefulness, we programmed the equations in MATLAB and used them to solve
a simple example. Results were compared with those obtained from the finite
element code PLAXIS. An adequate agreement was found between both
applications. Also a web page is provided to access the application built in
MATLAB.
