Summary
This paper presents preliminary results of the optimization of a spatial single tubular structure created with the multipurpose modular pipe-Z system. In this process both the geometrical parameters of the module, and the shape of the entire structure comprised of the replicas of that module are optimized. The total number of modules to complete a given path without violating certain constraints is minimized. The general procedure is illustrated with a two-dimensional simplification. The results produced by random search are presented and discussed. Finally, as an example for three-dimensional shape optimization a knot is constructed with the minimal number of identical modules.
