Summary
The grout connection ties a monopile foundation to the tower on an offshore wind turbine. More or less all offshore wind turbines on monopiles have this structural solution. Unfortunately, vertical failure settlements have been observed as a result of the loss of friction/bonding in the grout material. This observation obviously requires a reassessment of the structural integrity of the grout connection. However visual inspections are not possibly and as such calibration of a detailed finite element analysis is practically impossible. The present paper considers the potential of using a structural health monitoring (SHM) method for detecting failures in a grouted connection. A finite element model representing different assumed damage stages of the grout connection is established and acceleration time series are simulated. A time series model based on the SHM method indicates that minor simulated damages can be identified.
