Summary
The use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) as structural reinforcement is gaining more and more interest in construction practice. This research was conducted to investigate the behaviour of rectangular reinforced concrete beams retrofitted by carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) at the bottom of these beams. The numerical model considering material nonlinearities which was developed and verified against experimental works in Obaidat et al. was used in this study. This model showed good agreement between the finite element model results and the experimental results. The influences of taper end CFRP length were investigated by numerical analyses. The effect of the number of layers keeping the total thickness constant is studied; namely, a beam with two CFRP plates and a beam with three plates and having a total thickness of 1.2 mm. The results of the parametric study indicate that for taper end CFRP there is a threshold for the contribution of the CFRP plates. The effect of the number of layers keeping the total thickness constant has no influence on the load capacity of the strengthened beam using CFRP.
