Abstract
The 5- and 6-node transition quadrilateral elements with intermediate node(s) are developed for 3-dimensional analysis of shell structures. These elements are formulated by combining a membrane element improved by addition of nonconforming displacement modes and a plate bending element using modified shear strain polynomials. Such transition elements can be efficiently used in modelling the shell structures, in particular, where the stress concentration exists. A modified Gaussian quadrature is adopted to evaluate the stiffness matrices of these transition elements which have slope discontinuity of displacement within the elements. Two numerical examples are given to evaluate the basic behavior of the elements.
