Summary
As a result of inadequate development, a number of existing structures and structures under construction require additional strengthening due to inefficiencies in design and construction, as well as changes in building codes [1,2]. As the most fundamental element of any structure, the foundation must be controlled and rehabilitated to avoid any instability caused by such problems. If the stress in soil exceeds the load bearing capacity of the foundation as a result of the loading system, it can ultimately lead to soil failure and foundation instability of the structure. Another leading cause of instability is the significant settlement of soil under foundation loadings. High shear stress in foundation and low bending capacity are other sources of instability. Also uplift may occur due to structural system and loading conditions, especially under wind or earthquake cases. In this condition uplift restriction of foundation is necessary to maintain the stability of the structure.
In this paper, a number of innovative foundation retrofitting methods are introduced and analyzed. These methods incorporate two primary approaches: removal or reduction of elements compromising foundation safety, and secondly by strengthening structural elements to overcome foundation weakness. These methods were used in a research project [3] for the rehabilitation of a complicated steel structure. The proposed methods are highly effective while providing a cost-efficient solution with minimal construction requirements. Structural analysis and design were achieved using the SAP [4] software and FOUND [5] and SAFE [6] software for foundation analysis and design. References
