Abstract
Three major distinguishing features of expert systems are identified. The potential applications of expert systems in developing countries are discussed, with particular reference to the drinking water supply sector. The importance of carefully defining the area of application is emphasised, and it is argued that the most appropriate area within the development of a drinking water supply system is the preliminary design stage. Some of the anticipated advantages and drawbacks of using expert systems in developing countries are outlined. Finally, a description is given of the continuing development of a prototype expert system for the preliminary design of a drinking water treatment system.
