Abstract
Reasons behind the expanding use of micro-computers in structural analysis and design are surveyed and analysed. The particular requirements of a micro-computer program are presented with special reference to applications in the field of structures. Some practical programs for everyday use are presented with applications that include linear and non linear structural analysis procedures and interactive structural design using reinforced and prestressed concrete and steel.

Trends for future developments are identified and a forecast of possible changes in analysis and design practice brought about by the accelerating spread of micro-computers is presented.
